•
BAY AREA: In November the
Bay Area Group met in our unofficial “home,” the spacious and travelbook- lined
offices of Mountain Travel Sobek to hear member Cecelia
Hurwich give a
fascinating talk on “Vital Women in Their 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.” Her
presentation was based both on her ongoing research and her own life
experiences. In January, we met again to hear the wonderful story of writer
Ella Ellis’s
early life on which her memoir Dune
Child is based. The talk, entitled “Dune Child: A Memoir of Life during
the Depression in a Pacific Coast Literary Colony among Luminary Artists and
Photographers of the Era,” was sprinkled with anecdotes about “Uncle John”
(Steinbeck) who dropped in regularly, and was illustrated with photos by the
likes of Ansel Adams and Edward Westin.—Joanna Biggar
•
CHICAGO:
Beata Hayton
gave a talk about Viet Nam in
February. Camila Montoya’s

the Basque region of Spain was held at my house in January—Ellen Steinberg
Present at the Chicago event were Camila
Montoya, Sara McLafferty, Brenda Parker, Jodi Mills-Cerny, Mary Sue Coates,
Cathy Novotny-Brehm, Dorothy Dare, Helga Polet, Lucia Mouat, Beata Hayton,
LaVerne Kuhnke, Janice Spofford, Margot Hamp, Ellen Steinberg and two guests.

DC:
Ben Booz,
who in 1979 was one of the first westerners to return to China in the post-Mao
period, spoke at Headquarters in February about her fifth visit there
last October. Ben taught in the foreign language department of Yunnan University
in Kunming, and the occasion for her visit was the 25th reunion of the first
class to graduate from the school. The two textbooks she wrote for use in her
classes are still in use, at least in western China. In January, members of
the Washington Group attended a lecture at the University of the District of
Columbia by Dr. Claudette Bennett, Chief of the Racial Statistics Branch,
Population Division, U S Census Bureau. Dr. Bennett’s talk was arranged by SWG
President Kim Crews,
as part of SWG’s outreach to students in related disciplines at the University.
Archaeologist Joan Breton

FLORIDA: The Florida
group gathered at their Christmas meeting in the garden of
Georgia Tasker, the Miami
Herald’s Garden Editor. She and
Sandy Schultz
gave us a tour of their garden and
koi pond. The March meeting will be at the home of
Sawsan Khouri Maunder.
She will present her slide show entitled “Seeing the Forest and the Trees, a
walk through the Lebanese countryside.”—Suzanne Kayyali

Our Christmas meeting took place on Sunday,
December 17, 2006 at the home of Georgia Tasker and Sandy Schultz in their

SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA: Members of the Southern California Group, and friends, enjoyed a
December visit to the Jewel
Tunnel, a mineral warehouse owned by Rock Currier, son of
Ada Currier,
former Chair of the group and one of our longest-term members. This wholesale
establishment is a huge warehouse filled with rocks, gemstones, decorative
objects made from stone, jewelry, and more. From bins of broken rock pieces
to tiny gems, there is so much to see that we almost neglected to enjoy the
lunch kindly provided by Mr. Currier. The items are imported form countries in
Africa, South America, and China—Ray Sumner

Mr. Currier, second from left at the rear,
with several of our members. Others were too fascinated by" The Tunnel" to be
assembled for a picture.
