2010-2011 Pruitt Minority Fellowship Recipients

California State University, Long Beach
Annette Quintero – Dept. of Geography
Annette will be making two visits to Costa Rica this year to do her thesis research. She will be investigating food availability and accessibility through data collected at the national level and through household surveys. She expects to find discrepancies between the picture regarding food security and insecurity conveyed by national data and that provided by household interviews. The results of analysis of her household surveys may provide local organizations and governmental agencies with local-scale data that informs their policy making. Annette is the daughter of immigrants and aspires to earn a Ph.D.

University of Oregon
Denise Tu – Dept. of Geography
Her specialties are fluvial geomorphology and aquatic habitat recovery. She is gaining experience with geographical information analysis (GIA) and its application to riverine systems and management.  Denise’s B.S. is in biological systems engineering from the University of California, Davis. She is combining her background in bio-sytems engineering with the skills she is attaining in GIA to assess the success of river restoration efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Specifically, she is looking at the impact of engineered logjams on erosion and deposition of sediments and stream flow patterns.
